History of 8th Jyotirlinga Trimbakeshwar Mahadev

  • Today we shall discuss about, 8th Jyotirlinga - Trimbakeshwar Mahadeva situated in Nashik, Maharashtra. This story is not only about jyotirlinga but also about Ganga river's return to earth. So let's find out. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is situated in Trimbak near Bramhagiri. 
  • Once it didn't rain here since a long time. This resulted in everyone including animals to migrate. To find a solution, Maharishi Gautam started praying to God Varun for 6 months. An impressed God Varun, asked Mahadeva to dig a huge hole. 
  • God Varun filled it with water then there was greenery all around. All beings also returned to stay there. All the people, appreciated Maharishi Gautam's hardwork. Once Maharishi's students went to fetch some water from the lake. At that time, wives of other saints also happened to be there. 
  • The wives wanted to be the first to take the water from the lake. Mother Ahalaya, told the ladies that the boys were here before them. So let them take the water first. But this angered the ladies  they thought that Mother Ahalaya was being biased towards the boys. 
  • They also thought that because it was Maharishi Gautam as he was the reason for the water being restored. The wives returned to their husbands exaggerated the entire incident. 
  • The other saints decided to take revenge started praying to Ganesha. When Ganesha appeared, all the saints requested him to help them embarrass Maharishi Gautam. Lord Ganesha told them, it's not right to have hatred against him. After all he was the one, who got water to this barren land. 
  • But the saints stood firm Lord Ganesha had to accept their wish. He also warned them, that it may not end on a positive note. Once Lord Ganesha, took the form of a cow visited Maharishi Gautam. Maharishi Gautam started feeding the cow. As soon as the cow ate what Maharishi fed him, it fell on the ground died. 
  • The other saints  their wives saw this, while they were hiding behind a pile of hay. At that moment, they came out  called him Cow Killer. They told him, as long as you reside here, the gods will not be happy &content with them. So leave this place forever, along with your family. So Maharishi Gautam, moved bases quite far from Trimbakeshwar, but the saints started visiting & harassing them. They also stopped him from using fire related work. 
  • At that time, Maharishi Gautam decided to apologize for his mistake. So all the saints told him that, if you have to apologize then, You have to revolve around the earth 3 times, Then fast for 1 month. Then revolve around Brahmagiri mountains 100 times. 
  • Only then you will be acquitted of your crime. Or... Get Ganga river on earth take bath in it, Then make 100 Million Parthivlinga & pray to Lord Shiva, Then again take bath in Ganga revolve 11 times around Brahmagiri mountains. 
  • After that, offer water to Parthivling by using 100 pots. Only then you will be acquitted. Maharishi Gautam his wife Ahalaya did exactly what they were instructed to do. Lord Shiva was impressed by Maharishi Gautam's penance. 
  • And granted him a boon. Maharishi Gautam asked him to be acquitted of the crime. Lord Shiva told him that, you are not a criminal, the other saints are the criminals. You are as pure as Ganga, others will never be respected. Maharishi Gautam said that, it was due to these saints that I had the privilege of meeting you. 
  • And if you're impressed, then get God Ganga to earth. Lord Shiva asked Ganga to place herself on earth. But Ganga said, she would it only on one condition. Only if Lord Shiva resides here with his family in form of linga. Also all other gods will also reside here. To this Lord Shiva agreed. All the other gods also agreed. And that's how Ganga started flowing as Godavari. The Jyotirlinga was called as Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.
