History of Nineth Jyotirlinga,Baidyanath Mahadev

  •  the Nineth Jyotirlingam, which is as popular as the Jyotirlingams in Somnath, Kedarnath and Kashi Vishwanath and extremely crucial as a Jyotirlingam in the Shravan month of the Sanatan calendar. We’re talking about the Baidyanath Jyotirlingam, situated in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand.
  • This Jyotirlingam is a Siddhapeetha, and since all the wishes of the visiting devotees are granted here, this Jyotirlingam is also known as ‘Kamna Jyotirlingam’. Though a temple named Baijnath also exists in Himachal Pradesh, officially the Baidyanath Jyotirlingam in Deoghar is universally accepted.
  • Being the center of the extremely popular Kanwar yatra in the Shravan month, Every year, during the month of Shravana, the Shravana mela is organized, wherein millions of devotees come up to Baidyanath chanting ‘Bol Bam’ All these devotees taking the holy Gangajal in their vessels, undertake a long journey on foot from Sultanganj to Baidyanath, which is almost a hundred kilometers in length.
  • There are two unique characteristics associated with this temple. Not only do the devotees directly do the Jalabhishekam on the Jyotirlingam, but also instead of the iconic Trishul, the Panchshula are installed here. It is because according to the folk tales, Ravana used to defend his Lanka with the Panchshula.

  • It was Ravana who had taken the Jyotirlingam from Mount Kailash to his abode in Lanka. However, destiny had something else planned from him. This is not all. Apart from this Jyotirlingam, the devotees have to visit another important shrine. Though there is no mention of this temple in the Puranas, however in the modern times, if the devotees don’t pay a visit to the Vasukinath Mandir, their Baidyanath Yatra is considered incomplete.
  •  Vasukinath is extremely famous for its Shiva Mandir. This is situated 42 kms. away from Deoghar, near the Jarmundi village. One can see the beauty of the local handicrafts here. Its historical significance can be understood by visiting the Ghatol of Nonihat here. There are several other small temples in Vasukinath.
  • The glory of Baidyanath Dham is elucidated as follows - He who resides with Girija at Chita Bhoomi [Baidyanath Dham] in the North East, he who is worshipped by Devas and Asuras alike, I bow in reverence to Bhagwan Baidyanath. Shiv Purana and Ramayana, both have a detailed description about the formation of the Baidyanath Jyotirlingam.
  • According to them, Ravana, who wished to become the Lord of all the Three Worlds [SwargLoka, Prithvi Loka, Patal Loka], undertook severe penance in the Himalayas in order to seek the blessings of Bhagwan Shiva. He even devoted one of his ten heads to the Jyotirlingam with each passing day. When he was going to devote his tenth head as well, Bhagwan Shiva, pleased by his penance, appeared in front of him.

  • After restoring his ten heads, Shiv ji asked Ravana for a boon, to which he replied that Bhagwan Shiva should come with him to live in Lanka. Shiv ji acceded to his request in the form of a Jyotirlingam, but with the condition that if Ravana kept this Jyotirlingam at any place on the Earth, it shall be permanently established and nobody shall be able to remove it.
  • Ravana set out with the Shivalingam, but on an important turnaround in his route, he was forced to attend to nature’s call. Ravana gave that Shivalingam to a cowherd named Baiju in order to complete his ablutions. Baiju found the Jyotirlingam too heavy for himself and placed it on the ground.
  •  When Ravana returned, he failed to lift the Jyotirlingam up, despite the best of his efforts, and he was compelled to leave it there and then. Later on, all the Devas including Bhagwan Brahma and Shri Vishnu came to the place and began worshipping the Shivalingam. Once they sought the blessings of Bhagwan Shiva, they formally established the Jyotirlingam and returned to Heaven. This is how Baidyanath Jyotirlingam was formally established.
  • While some people are of the opinion that Baidyanath Jyotirlingam is named Baiju the cowherd, others are of the opinion that since Mahadev had restored the 10 heads of Ravana, he was bestowed with the title ‘Baidyanath’. According to the folktales, this Jyotirlingam fulfils every wish that is asked for. So this was the tale of Baidyanath Jyotirlingam.
