History of 12th Jyotirlinga,Ghrishneshwar Mahadev
- the 12th and the penultimate Jyotirlingam. Situated close to the famous Ellora caves, many forirgn invaders wanted to destroy this temple, however the temple stood aloft, unfazed by the incessant invasions. We're talking about the Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlingam, situated not very far from the Ellora caves in Maharashtra.
- Ghrishneshwar means the Lord of Compassion. Situated from the cities, this Mandir is simplicity personified. This the last Jyotirlingam among the 12 Jyotirlingams. This is also known as Ghushmeshwar, Ghrishraneswar etc. This is situated in the Verul village, 12 kilometres from Devagiri, also known as Daulatabad.
- This Jyotirlingam is amongst the smallest in terms of the size of the temple complex. Like Somnath Mandir and Kashi Vishwanath Mandir, this temple has also faced incessant foreign invasions. However, despite also being ransacked more than once, this temple has been re-established with equal zeal and gusto.
- He who is worshipped by one and all and resides in the beuatiful temple in Ilapur (Ellora), he who is compassionate by nature, I'm ready to seek the blessings of the Bhagwan Ghrishneshwar. How Ghrishneshwar Dham was formed is described very well in the Shiv Purana. According to the chapter devoted to the same, there used to live a pious and devout Brahmin named Sudharma. He had a wife known as Sudeha, and both loved each other dearly.
- They had no trouble in their lives, except for the fact that they were childless. On consulting with the astrology sources, it was found that out that Sudeha could never bear a child. Sudeha was eager to bear a child, and so suggested Sudharma to marry her younger sister Ghushma. Sudharma wasn't eager on this, but in the end, Sudeha left him with no choice. Ghushma was a polite and devout woman.
- She was also devoted to Bhagwan Shiva. She used to create one hundred Shiva lingams daily and used to worship Bhagwan Shiva with all her devotion. Due to the blessings of Bhagwan Shiva, an extremely beuatiful and healthy baby took birth. Both Sudeha and Ghushma were ecstatic on the same.
- Everything was going well, when suddenly a doubt seeped into the mind of Sudeha. She thought, ' Nothing in this house belongs to me. Everything is for Ghushma.' Now the doubt had grown into the feeling of jealousy towards Ghushma and her son, who had now grown up and was married as well.
- One day, when everyone sleeping, Sudeha murdered Ghushma's young son and threw his corpse into the same pond, wherein Ghushma used to do the Visarjan of the Shiva Lingams. When everyone got to knwo about the incident, the household was shell shocked. Sudharma and Ghushma's young daughter in law wept bitterly.
- However Ghushma was unfazed, as if nothing had happened. She continued to proceed towards the pond to do the Visarjan of the Shiva Lingams. When she began returning from the pond, get son came out of the pond, and he fell at her feet, as if he had just returned from somewhere.
- At the same time, Bhagwan Shiva, pleased by Ghushma's devotions, appeared in front of her ana asked for a boon. He was also livid over Sudeha's sin and wanted to slay her with his Trishul. At this moment, Ghushma said, "prabhu. If you're pleased with me, spare my poor sister.
- She has without doubt committed a heinous crime, but I thank you that I've got my son back. So please forgive her and Prabhu! I request you to stay here for the betterment of the mankind. Bhagwan Shiva accepted both the requests and converted himself into a Jyotirlingam. Being the beloved deity of Ghushma, Shiva is also known as Ghushmeshwar Mahadev.
- It is said that worshipping this place is beneficial for all the worlds. This Jyotirlingam is also important historically. The temple was first destroyed by the Sultans of the Delhi Sultanate.
- It was later reconstructed by an officer from Ahmednagar province, Maloji Raje Bhonsle, whose grandson Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhonsle later set out the blueprint of restoring Sanatan Dharma. Apart from Maloji Raje Bhonsle, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar had a crucial role in giving shape to the modern Ghrishneshwar Dham.
